Felsted Preparatory School has never reached the knock-out
stages of the National Rosslyn Park Sevens until now! An outstanding squad
reached the last 16 of the tournament and just missed out on a place in the
quarter-finals. Their first game against Lambrook Haileybury saw the side
slowly warm to the challenge and a 29 – 0 victory was a fair reflection of the
difference between the two sides. Against Hazelgrove we played poorly but still
managed to win 20 – 5.
Then came the group decider against IAPS Kenya. As we said
to the boys, how often do you get the chance to play Kenya but more importantly
how often do you get the chance to say you’ve beaten Kenya! They responded
magnificently and played the game of their lives to win 12 – 0 in an epic
encounter of exciting, ambitious rugby given the conditions. This meant we were
through to the last 16 and a final game to play that day. We came up against
local rivals Bishop’s Stortford College who had faced an easier group and it
proved to be one game too far as we lost 0 – 7 despite being camped on their
line for the last two minutes.
Overall it was a spectacular achievement for the squad.
