Boys' Rugby v Orwell Park

Last weekend the 1st and 2nd XVs were involved in matches against Orwell Park whilst the U11 A and B teams took part in the second 7-a-side tournament, also involving St Cedd’s, the Perse Preparatory and Dame Bradbury’s. Comfortable victories for the senior sides with over 100 points scored were matched by the U11 A team winning their 7s tournament without conceding a try and the B team managing a very respectable 4th place. On Wednesday an U11 A/B side took on FKS and a last edge of the seat try saw them win by 7 - 5.

1st XV Won 57 – 5
Clearly the festive spirit of our Christmas Fair had gone to the 1st XV players' heads as they gifted Orwell Park a try in the corner from the kick-off! After this the team woke up and remembered why they were there and a combination of pace and power saw us run in 5 unanswered tries in the rest of the first half. We played with pace and aggression, and the pick and drive game worked well. We also handled the ball extremely well and looked to move the ball down the middle as well as moving it wide. The second half became a little disjointed as one or two players held onto the ball a fraction too long rather than off loading and keeping the fast paced momentum going. We also took off Harry and Gregoire to even up the game and played the last ten minutes with only 13 players on the pitch. Having said this we still managed to score plenty of tries in the second half.

Tries came from Harry Sturge, Gregoire Imber, Ollie Stonham, James Cotterill and Robbie MacLennan whilst Toby King added a conversion (once again he was under orders to miss!); in fact Toby had a really good game on his return after soccer duty last weekend.

Overall this was another convincing win for the 1st XV and I think they are really enjoying playing for each other. There were several performances of note and I thought Nathan Richard’s work rate and work on the floor was superb, but once again for me the 1st XV captain Ollie led by example. Man of the match? For me there were 16 of them!

2nd XV Won 56 – 0
A very convincing win as we controlled the whole game in both the tight and loose with tries coming from all areas.
